“If I may?”

Before she could protest, the young lord stepped away. Emily’s eyes narrowed at the man who took his place, though she accepted his hand on her back without comment. He said not a word, and his silence was intriguing. She studied him carefully as they danced.

A/N Oct 2018: Ayyy, here’s some more of the fae AU. I still don’t have titles, but I’ve gone ahead and figured out where different chunks fit, so there’s at least an order (Prelude, 1-1, 1-2, etc). More of my work on AO3, FFnet, ko-fi (for previews). I wish there was some way for people to do mid-page notes like how people can leave comments on soundcloud; I always like to know which moments hit and which miss. Anyway, enjoy. ^^

At this rate, I won’t even want to sneak away.

The feast of the night was - apparently - to be held outdoors, lit by paper lanterns strung between tents, and candelabras that bordered on garish. While the common folk caroused around bonfires, the nobility would sit at tables decked in gilded ivy drinking wine, dancing, suffering through formal introductions and - for Emily - trying to ignore her father’s overprotective gaze. She supposed his worry was logical, given his obsession with fae. It was the last day of the Mummers’ Feasts, after all. The time where the veil between worlds was thin, workers rested from their harvest, and left offerings and held raucous celebrations to appease the fae and keep in their good graces. If there was ever a day for Corvo to be paranoid, this seemed appropriate. Still, his constant stare was bound to get irritating.

A/N Sept 2018: I have no idea what to call this series, or if I should title it at all. So here’s the first bit I wrote for the fae AU (once more I find myself writing in manageable little chunks and then going in to bridge between sections). It’s mostly establishing the backstory as shifted to the new setting. If you like my work, find more over on AO3 or FFnet, and keep an eye on my ko-fi if you want the occasional preview. Oh, also, I hesitate to ask but... comments?.

Chapter Title: The Queen
Chapter Part:
1/3
Story Part: 2/?
Pairing: eventual Emily/Outsider (emsider)

Summary: Ever since she was a child Emily had been cautioned: beware the fae. She’d heard the typical warnings – faerie rings, wishing wells, mysterious lights in the darkness. But they were just cautionary tales... [A Dishonored fae AU]
start here (prelude), next part (1-2)

Ever since she was a child Emily had been cautioned: beware the fae. She’d heard the typical warnings -- faerie rings, wishing wells, mysterious lights in the darkness. But they were just cautionary tales, names of people she’d never met, stories about a land where things were so beautiful they would drive men mad. She’d never known a family that thought itself to have a changeling. She’d never spotted a brownie dusting up the corners of the castle. No faerie-gifted musicians or craftsmen had ever taken work in the royal palace.

When she was ten - when her mother was murdered - things changed. Years later Emily struggled to remember that day-- those months. People grabbing her, pulling her away as she screamed for her mother, watching glassy eyes that stared unblinkingly to the sky, fingers digging into her shoulders as she shrieked and wailed. Some time - days? weeks? - locked up in a room with only masked jailers to bring her sustenance. Losing herself in daydreams of how her mother was fine, and how she’d have every guard and soldier and knight in the kingdom looking for her daughter, how Corvo would come for her. Every time she heard swords clashing she’d imagine it was him, on the warpath to come rescue her. But it never was. Then she’d been moved.

A/N Nov 2018: A lot of the brainstorming for this whole fic was done with the help of Iron Moon who was very nearly a co-author until I got impatient and cranked out several pages in a short amount of time and then just kept writing. She is still the go-to for discussing plot points, and - let's be honest - probably the only one following along as I post over on Tumblr. This is also HEAVILY influenced by Holly Black's work, and I definitely borrowed some of the faerie mythos from her worlds, as well as kinda yolo-ing it for other world-specific myths and things.

“I… I need help.”

He’d wandered into the wrong glade if he was hoping for charity.

If he’d wanted something sweet and kind he’d do better bringing milk to the toadstool rings on twilit hills. Not coming empty-handed to the foxfire ring in the deep forest.

“And why should I help you?”

A/N Sept 2018: So I wrote this a while back, and intended it to be part of a longer fic, with this as the ‘jumping right into the deep end’ nightmare prologue, but it works well enough as a standalone ficlet. I may end up posting on AO3/FFnet, I may not. For more of my work - AO3, FFnet, ko-fi. This one is... dark. Gory. Perhaps depressing. But, as I said, it’s a nightmare.

Title: beastly
Chapter: 1/1
Characters: Emily Kaldwin
Word count: 2289
Rating: T/M for canon-typical gore
Summary: Emily has a nightmare?

Emily felt the sting and burn of the blade cutting into her flesh even as she ducked and dodged, but, true to her training, she didn’t falter. A flash of steel and one attacker fell, grabbing at his sliced tendon, a thud and he was out cold thanks to a heavy blow to the temple. She tried not to kill them. She’d been trying. But her non-lethal ammo ran out after the first ten or twenty and they seemed to keep coming.

Her Void-given abilities had helped take them down efficiently at first, but she only had so much energy. The bodies had begun to pile up. For a fairly large room, there wasn’t much space to maneuver around the unconscious bodies that littered the floor.

How long had she been fighting? It felt like ages, though she knew it couldn’t have been that long -- time seemed to slow in a fight, but it couldn’t have been more than eight minutes. Still, eight minutes was an eternity. Most fights were over in one, maybe two. But - seven strictures - they kept coming.

A/N Aug 2018: Welp, this ends the ficlet. ...I’ll probably write a follow-up, cause my smutty heart has not been satisfied, as much as this chapter went ahead and shifted the story to a weak M rating. Feel free to hmu on AO3, FFnet, or buy me a ko-fi.

Title: The Rhyme of the Rosewater Hag

Word count: 1258
Rating: M
Summary: “That’s a lie.” // “May the Outsider claim my lying tongue if it is.”
start here (1/3), previously (2/3)

Oaths? What oaths? Something inside her was twisting and roiling in her gut, and she could barely think, let alone remember making an oath. Multiple oaths?

“I don’t…” Her voice came out weaker than she’d wanted, and she hurriedly cleared her throat. But before she could speak again-

“You lied, empress.”

Summary: “That’s a lie.” // “May the Outsider claim my lying tongue if it is.”
next part (2/3)

“That’s a lie.”

“May the Outsider claim my lying tongue if it is.” Emily raised her hand solemnly, shooting a pointed look at the suspiciously silent Wyman. The smirk on the young Morleyan’s face was far too broad.

“You’re saying you’ve never used a bone charm? Ever?” The Tyvian ambassador’s daughter looked thoroughly doubtful.

“This is beyond unnecessary.” She shot him a sidelong skeptical glance but he paid no attention, a pair of tweezers in one his hands as he examined one of hers under lamplight. “…Really, I’ve had much worse,” she added, clenching her jaw briefly as he plucked free a particularly nasty sliver of glass.

Title: waves
Chapter: 1/1
Pairing: Emily/Outsider (emsider)
Word count: 2559
Rating: PG
Summary: She still had so many questions unanswered. Why hadn’t she asked them sooner? What was wrong with her? // Well she wasn’t going to lose him now.

Emily felt a sudden pang of shock when she spotted him in the water. What was he doing? Where did he think he was going?

She opened her mouth to call out to him, but realized that was absolutely pointless. She wasn’t even outside. Even if she had been, not only was he too far to hear her; there was no chance her voice would be audible over the sound of the rain, and of the sea crashing on the rocks below the lighthouse. But it was definitely him.

No one else would be so incredibly stupid.

Title: Roving Feet
Chapter: 2/2
Pairing: Emily/Outsider (emsider)
Word count: 3143
Rating: T, bordering on M -- fade to black
Summary: “Come on in, Empress.” His voice was even, relaxed, and when she blinked into dark vision she saw him around the corner of the window, facing inward, as though waiting for her to appear. So she did.
start here (1/2)

She didn’t visit him for a long time after that. She covered her fear with anger. He was manipulating her. She shouldn’t feel bad for the man, he didn’t want her pity -- but maybe he wanted her anger. Was that what he wanted? For her to be mad at him? He seemed to teem with some surging writhing something and parsing out just what that was was beyond her. She didn’t have the energy to invest.

The Outsider became just another subject she was briefed on. How his health was, plans for integrating him into society. He would need a name.

“Will we give him a title?”

Corvo seemed surprised at her question. “I… hadn’t considered it.”

She avoided her father’s eyes, keeping her tone blasé and her eyes glued to the papers she perused. “It seems he would be useful to have on hand in case of any… Void-related occurrences.”

Her father’s body stilled and his eyes narrowed. Maybe she was a little too eager. “...Void-related occurrences,” he repeated, just barely holding back his incredulity.

Title: scandal
Chapter: 1/1
Pairing: Emily/Outsider [emsider]
Word count: 3955
Rating: T
Summary: “If I asked you to-” The confident words died on her tongue as she met his gaze again. His pale, knowing, fiery gaze. She was breathless. // “You know I would.”

“Yes, thank you, that’s - yes, that’s-” Emily found her irritation growing as the gentleman before her bobbed his bow again and again, but she kept her face placid. “Yes, Lord Durham, that’s very-” again, he bowed, “-very good. I wish you the best of luck with your endeavors, truly. Now, if you don’t mind-” She side-stepped the pinch-faced man who had been rambling on about some new projects he’d be able to move forward thanks to her most recent negotiations of trade agreements and… She sighed. It didn’t matter. Just the thought of policy meetings and paperwork made her legs heavy.

“Why do you let these people close to me?” Her voice was low as she directed the dry comment to her father, who had quickly fallen in step with her when she’d left her last conversation. “I swear, there’s some maniac pulling the strings who wishes to bore me to death. Aren’t you supposed to be Royally Protecting me?”

She just barely spotted Corvo’s crooked smile out of the corner of her eye as he ducked his head. “And I am, Your Majesty. Even if you don’t believe it.”

Title: will
Chapter: 1/1
Pairing: Emily/Outsider [emsider]
Word count: 1166
Rating: PG
Summary/Prompt: “If I told you to leave, would you? Would you run?”

Empress Emily Kaldwin was spending her evenings as she often did: working. The desk in her quarters was laden with small stacks of papers, maps, reports and invitations and requests. She only had so many hours in the day, but she did her best. It was exhausting, but she owed it to her people.

She let out a heavy sigh, rubbing dry eyes as she set aside the most recent report from the spies in Tyvia. More rebellion. The cold wastes teemed with an angry populous easily swayed by sweet words from deposed princes. Tyvia was far from Dunwall - never an immediate threat to her safety, by any means - but that didn’t lessen Emily’s twinge of discomfort with each consecutive report. Her mind (a little too imaginative for her own good, ever since she was a child) drifted with unbidden thoughts.

Title: heresy
Chapter: 1/1
Pairing: Emily/Outsider [emsider]
Word count: 1744
Rating: T? acknowledges the existence of sex
Summary/Prompt: "Playing at heresy, Your Imperial Majesty?”

She'd received the scrimshaw bracelet as part of a series of unwanted gifts from Whitecliff, supposedly meant to reinforce the bond between the Crown and the Abbey. More like a reminder that the Abbey was always watching. The bracelet was a series of six whalebone panels: four for the four isles of the Empire, one for the Abbey, one for the Crown. It was carefully and intricately crafted - she was sure whoever had made it must have spent months with fine delicate tools - each panel depicting a highly detailed scene specific to that facet of the Empire.

Emily ran her thumb over the panel meant to represent Gristol -- a whale in a sling. A slaughterhouse, to represent her homeland. And of course next to it, on the panel representing the Crown: her face.

The juxtaposition made her ill.
